{"id":964,"date":"2019-03-14T14:20:48","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T14:20:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inpulse.com\/?p=964"},"modified":"2019-03-14T14:20:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-14T14:20:48","slug":"measuring-engagement-through-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/measuring-engagement-through-change","title":{"rendered":"MEASURING ENGAGEMENT THROUGH CHANGE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over the last year we\u2019ve worked with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">companies going through major change. We\u2019ve successfully convinced each of them of the value of regularly measuring how their people feel through the period of transition.\u00a0 Using\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inpulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0they were able to pulse their employees bi-monthly, simply asking how they felt about the changes and why.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We also did some\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">small<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">er<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and more frequent\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pulse surveys among senior members of staff (managers)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0see how they were feeling<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s they had a key role in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0leading others through change<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s amazing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">how may clients\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">initially\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">say to us \u201cwe\u2019re thinking of not measuring\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">engagemen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t levels during times of change.\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s a terrible idea!\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is the perfect time to get a baseline measurement\u2014not only to understand how your employees feel and therefore how engaged your employees are, but to then create the best ways to manage and resolve the issues of dis-engagement highlighted by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inpulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0so these do not spiral during the period of change.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The irony is that, whether you survey or not, the issues of dis-engagement are still happening but at least by using\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inpulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0you can find out what they are and how to resolve them more quickly, saving huge amounts of time, energy and effort in the process.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Let<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s give you a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">real life<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0example<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2026<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With one client when<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0their employees were<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0asked how they felt, 70% responded with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">negative emotions, worried, fearful, upset, uninterested. When asked why<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0they said that they didn\u2019t feel they had\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">see<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0hear<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from their senior leaders\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">once the announcement had been made<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n particular<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y didn\u2019t really understand the new vision for the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">organisation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Simple solut<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ion. Senior leaders were\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">organis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">over the next month\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">do\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">formal communication<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0through Town Halls and the informal by dropping into team meetings and gathering teams briefly for 10mins at lunch time to explain<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the ne<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">w business direction and model.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The result? When\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inpulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was run a month later 40% responded with negative emotions. The 60% who responded with positive emotions, feeling hopeful, excited, focused and happy referenced having a clearer picture of where the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">organisation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was heading and what this might mean for them personally. Still work to do but it shows the tangible impact\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inpulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0had in resolving the issues much more quickly than waiting for the \u2018jungle drums\u2019 or \u2018water cooler\u2019 conversations which are often not correct.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We also know the impact change has on Managers, by using\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inpulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to measure how they are feeling a large FMCG client was able to track engagement levels and deal with the issues\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as they arose. These were mainly to do with a need for clarity of communication and they said they were helped by being able to use\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inpulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to ask the questions they were afraid to ask directly. A comment from one Manager after 3 months of using\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inpulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0regularly made our day!\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI was seriously impressed that leaders chose to use\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inpulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0through our recent changes. In doing so they showed that they understand that change really does impact how I feel and not just what I think. I also loved being able to explain why, as that often led to the leaders changing their approach to the way changes were communicated and this made us feel like we had some influence over the changes.
