It all takes a toll \u2013 especially if you have been running on gas and haven\u2019t stopped to take stock of your own mental and emotional state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collectively, we\u2019re in a period of recovery. If we don\u2019t do the work to care for ourselves in this \u201cpost-pandemic\u201d phase, we run the risk of severe depletion and burnout. So, as a leader, how do you model this recovery to your employees and forge a positive and healthy path forwards into 2023?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-getting-over-the-first-hurdle\"><strong>Getting Over the First Hurdle<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Despite the well-known benefits, many leaders remain resistant to the whole idea of self-care. This resistance often stems from a feeling that self-care is a sign of weakness, a feeling that they just don\u2019t have time, or just generally rolling their eyes at the entire concept.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>(Leadership coach Palena Neale, HBR).<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>If this sounds like you, perhaps it\u2019s time to revisit some of those \u201cwell-known benefits\u201d \u2013 both on a personal and an organisational level. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improved focus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Motivation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Productivity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creativity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A positive approach to problem-solving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Innovation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fruitful collaboration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s also remember that support for mental and emotional health is high on the priority list for today\u2019s workforce. A recent study into employee wellbeing revealed that 40% of Millennials and Gen Zs felt their employers did a poor job of supporting their mental wellbeing during the pandemic (Deloitte, 21). If you don\u2019t make this a priority now, you risk losing your greatest asset: a talented and motivated workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-knowing-what-self-care-looks-like\"><strong>Knowing What Self-Care Looks Like<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-care doesn\u2019t look the same for everyone, but there are some common factors that contribute to mental and emotional wellbeing. You don\u2019t have to completely overhaul your approach to life and work overnight, but you can start to make some simple adjustments to your everyday habits, routines, and priorities. This might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A healthy diet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regular exercise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Getting enough sleep<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regular breaks from noise and activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delegation, with a management structure that you can trust<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hobbies that help you to feel refreshed and fulfilled<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boundaries for a healthy work-life balance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intentional mindfulness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Studies show\u00a0that taking\u00a0breaks\u00a0can help\u00a0prevent decision fatigue,\u00a0renew and strengthen motivation,\u00a0increase productivity and creativity, and\u00a0consolidate memory and improve learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>(<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2020\/10\/serious-leaders-need-self-care-too\">HBR<\/a>)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-leading-with-vulnerability\"><strong>Leading with Vulnerability<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Vulnerability, as a resource in leadership and within the workplace, can impact the entire culture and creativity of a team.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/carleysime\/2019\/03\/27\/could-a-little-vulnerability-be-the-key-to-better-leadership\/?sh=6fb0bbfe783e\">Forbes<\/a>)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Vulnerability is not weakness; vulnerability is courage. (This the foundation of Bren\u00e9 Brown\u2019s entire <a href=\"https:\/\/brenebrown.com\/hubs\/dare-to-lead\/\">Dare to Lead<\/a> philosophy, based on extensive research.) Leaders who are willing to be vulnerable, to embrace uncertainty, to try and to fail, will be the most courageous and creative. And this then sets the tone for your employees, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>What is the reward? Far greater creativity and innovation. Your team members are more likely to take risks, to try something new, to deal with the discomfort of failure being an option.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/carleysime\/2019\/03\/27\/could-a-little-vulnerability-be-the-key-to-better-leadership\/?sh=6fb0bbfe783e\">Forbes<\/a>)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Making strategic decisions and driving the direction of the company is one thing, but you can also be a leader in terms of cultivating healthy habits and investing in your own wellbeing. This in itself is an invitation to your employees to do the same. As your own attitude, habits and priorities start to shift, this will also impact the shape and culture of your workplace \u2013 and you will reap the rewards, both professionally and
