{"id":3958,"date":"2021-01-29T10:22:44","date_gmt":"2021-01-29T10:22:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inpulse.com\/?p=3958"},"modified":"2021-01-29T10:22:44","modified_gmt":"2021-01-29T10:22:44","slug":"diversity-inclusion-employee-emotions-range-from-valued-to-uncomfortable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/diversity-inclusion-employee-emotions-range-from-valued-to-uncomfortable","title":{"rendered":"Diversity &#038; Inclusion: Employee emotions range from \u2018valued\u2019 to \u2018uncomfortable\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">News release <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Diversity &amp; Inclusion: Employee emotions range from \u2018valued\u2019 to \u2018uncomfortable\u2019 <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>Significant differences shown by Black or Black British in their feelings of opportunities and belonging in UK survey<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">New research from employee engagement experts,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Inpulse<\/span><\/a>\u00a0shows the emotions people feel when discussing diversity and inclusion (D&amp;I) at work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Overall, respondents\u2019 most common positive emotions are \u2018valued\u2019 (28%), \u2018confident\u2019 (27%) and \u2018hopeful\u2019 (19%). However, people also feel apprehension and uncomfortable when discussing D&amp;I, with 25% and 22% feeling these emotions. The survey showed too that males were more concerned about having D&amp;I conversations at work, with 32% saying they feel \u2018apprehensive\u2019 compared to 17% of females and 20% of other genders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Inpulse\u2019s diversity and inclusion index measures equality in key areas of a business: structure, opportunity, culture, belonging, leadership and trust. <\/span><span class=\"s3\">On top of this, emotional analytics investigate employee feelings and emotions to help employers understand what may need to change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The survey showed stark differences in respondents\u2019 emotions about their feelings on \u2018Opportunity\u2019 and \u2018Belonging\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li6\"><span class=\"s1\">Overall, respondents answered 54% positively to the statements for \u2018opportunity\u2019 which explores recruitment, career progression and development opportunities for people at work. The only ethnic group to answer below 50% was Black or Black British respondents with just 29% answering positively. \u2018Opportunity\u2019 also had <\/span><span class=\"s3\">the greatest influence on the overall D&amp;I index, suggesting this is an important issue to address if an organisation wants to help people feel more included and valued: respondents wanted to see diversity<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> amongst those in senior positions, to be given progression opportunities and to be able to develop their skills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li6\"><span class=\"s1\">When it came to a sense of \u2018Belonging\u2019, overall respondents answered 56% positively. However, Black or Black British respondents answered 29% positively. Over half (57%) of Black or Black British respondents felt they could not \u201cvoice a contrary opinion without fear of negative consequences\u201d and didn\u2019t \u201cfeel like my colleagues understand who I really am\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Matt Stephens, Founder and CEO of Inpulse, said, \u201cAlthough our sample was small, the differences between employee views show that employers need to tackle head-on the different emotions people feel when discussing diversity and inclusion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s not surprising that conversations about diversity and inclusion can feel uncomfortable, but we can see from the survey that open discussion can lead to people feeling more valued, confident, and hopeful. It is important that organisations do not avoid having these conversations because of fear when in actuality, opening and continuing good conversation leads to such positive outcomes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn fact, we can see too that \u2018Leadership\u2019 is also a key influence on the overall Diversity and Inclusion index, highlighting the influence senior leaders have on creating a culture that is representative and inclusive.
