{"id":3598,"date":"2020-08-12T13:10:57","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T13:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inpulse.com\/?p=3598"},"modified":"2020-08-12T13:10:57","modified_gmt":"2020-08-12T13:10:57","slug":"if-these-5-points-sound-familiar-youre-doing-wellbeing-wrong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/if-these-5-points-sound-familiar-youre-doing-wellbeing-wrong","title":{"rendered":"If these 5 Points Sound Familiar, You&#8217;re Doing Wellbeing Wrong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>+Redeem your free engagement and wellbeing guide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee wellbeing is no trend &#8211; even though it\u2019s fairly \u2018new\u2019, with companies like Google, Facebook, Huffington Post etc, implementing wellbeing strategies in the last decade or less, it is absolutely here to stay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Heightened importance has been placed on employee wellbeing since:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the understanding and transparency of mental health struggles have become more apparent (1 in 4 people struggle with poor mental health)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employers have wisened up to the fact that poor employee wellbeing greatly affects productivity, performance, presenteeism, customer satisfaction, employee turnover and much more.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employers have seen how by improving employee wellbeing, a multitude of otherwise costly problems can be avoided.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Other factors that negatively impact employee wellbeing:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Being overworked \/ fatigued<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Unfairness, inequality or discrimination in the workplace<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Poor job design (physical and technical)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Office politics<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Poor workplace culture\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Feeling unappreciated, underpaid etc<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Negative change (layoffs, change in structure etc)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Poor health (e.g severely over or underweight)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Poor work\/life balance<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Bad lifestyle habits<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/free-engagement-wellbeing-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Download your free engagement and wellbeing guide<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If employers seek to improve the above factors (at least those within their control), they\u2019ll automatically improve employee wellbeing; given they\u2019re taking the right approach, which involves listening to what their people need and want, and having them drive decision-making.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But many companies approach employee wellbeing amateurly. We say this because it\u2019s not wrong, it\u2019s just not smart &#8211; it\u2019s costly, time-consuming and non-sustainable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of employers listening to their people and understanding their pain points so as to properly solve them (which is the CORRECT way to improve employee wellbeing), they instead ADD a bunch of (usually trendy) things like a discounted gym membership and then hope for the best.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We at Inpulse have 20 years worth of experience in employee engagement and wellbeing, and what we can tell you for sure, is that this approach does not work &#8211; because it\u2019s not based on data, or research, or strategy, or anything valuable. It\u2019s based on trends that don\u2019t last.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your wellbeing strategy sounds something like this, you may want to reconsider it completely:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><b>You\u2019re implementing trendy initiatives to retain and attract talent<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s nothing wrong with implementing initiatives like free yoga classes, a discounted gym membership, or free lunch etc. These are all great things that I\u2019m sure your people enjoy, but the problem is that they aren\u2019t sustainable. They\u2019re aren\u2019t strategies that improve and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maintain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> employee wellbeing for years to come. They\u2019re fads that gain momentum quick, and then die off very quickly. The worst part is that employers believe that by adding these extra\u2019s they\u2019ll solve their problems, like retention and recruitment of talent. These aren\u2019t solutions, they\u2019re just \u2018nice-to-haves. Real solutions that yield rewarding results are one\u2019s that actually solve your people\u2019s problems: like feeling overworked and underappreciated etc. Save your time and money, and understand what it is your people really need and want from you &#8211; not what you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">think<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they want.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/free-engagement-wellbeing-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Download your free engagement and wellbeing guide<\/span><\/a><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><b>You\u2019re more concerned about people showing up for work, than what they feel about their work<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So many employers are concerned with presenteeism (they want their people showing up for work). Nothing wrong with that. But what are you doing to reduce absenteeism? Employers need to be more concerned about what their people <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feel about their work,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and how they <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feel about being at work<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because this is what\u2019ll get them not just showing up, but stepping up. If you\u2019re reading PR articles about your competitors implementing this and that trendy wellbeing strategy, and you\u2019re inspired to do the same &#8211; rather think again. Think about what your people actually want and need. The case for X is not going to be the case for Y. What their people want, will be different to what your people want. So before investing huge amounts of money and time, find out what your people really want.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><b>You\u2019re throwing benefits at your people to get them to work hard for you<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So you want to improve productivity and performance and boost revenue? Nothing wrong with that! But you believe that to achieve this, you need to shower your people with benefits? Well given how expensive this is, you\u2019ll probably be happy to know that this doesn\u2019t work. Again, providing benefits that aren\u2019t solving your people\u2019s problems is going to change absolutely nothing. You may think, well how do I find out what my people\u2019s problems are, and what they feel? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/surveys\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our surveys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You need to know that you\u2019re getting a return on your investments.
