{"id":3496,"date":"2020-07-13T06:57:15","date_gmt":"2020-07-13T06:57:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inpulse.com\/?p=3496"},"modified":"2020-07-13T06:57:15","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T06:57:15","slug":"improving-diversity-and-inclusion-may-be-the-key-to-solving-people-related-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/improving-diversity-and-inclusion-may-be-the-key-to-solving-people-related-issues","title":{"rendered":"Improving Diversity and Inclusion May be the Key to Solving People-Related Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Businesses, at least the most successful ones, are always fully committed to identifying and strengthening areas that may hamper their growth and success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even some of these businesses, as we now have learned, have missed a key element &#8211; diversity and inclusion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know this to be true because<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a survey of more than 5,000 people, a staggering <\/span><b>65%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all ethnic minority participants experienced<\/span><b> racial harassment in their workplace<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the last five years in Britain, while <\/span><b>49% <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said they had been <\/span><b>treated unfairly by their employer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of their race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s interesting to look at the figures when it comes to high staff turnover, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalhr.com\/2019\/10\/24\/uk-businesses-struggling-with-recruitment-and-retention-of-talent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poor recruitment of talent and talent retention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: these are issues a vast majority of businesses experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In line with recent studies, a <\/span><b>lack of diversity and inclusion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within an organisation may indeed be the leading cause of <\/span><b>high staff turnover and poor recruitment of talent.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a survey of 1300 full-time employees, conducted by Deloitte found that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">75% of senior managers who responded said they would consider leaving jobs for more diverse and inclusive organisations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80% of the respondents currently in the labour pool, said inclusion is an important factor in choosing a new employer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fact, if this is slightly surprising, can you imagine the many other areas that are being affected within your business due to a lack of diversity and inclusion?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The more \u2018common areas\u2019 that will rightly be affected, include<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-workplace culture<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-creativity and innovation<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-performance<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the lesser-known areas, which are just as, and sometimes even more important to a growing business, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/diversity-aids-customer-relationships-20140926-10mg9z.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sales, and client relationships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Every business, including yours, likely has a diverse client base.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lack of diversity and inclusion in your business can absolutely affect the relationships you have with existing and potential clients, as well as your reputation as a brand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are moving into a new era; societal undercurrents are being exposed and addressed, and people are becoming more conscious of their own actions and those of the businesses and people they support. If employees would leave one employer for another due to a lack of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/diversity-in-the-workplace-5-ways-to-educate-your-employees\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diversity and inclusion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; your clients are likely to do so too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So with this being said, if businesses want to be the change and use their power for the betterment of society, as well as retain their competitive advantage; their talent and their position in the market; diversity and inclusion needs to be made a priority.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Going about diversity and inclusion in your workplace\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that diversity and inclusion is a lot more than the representation of black and minority ethnic groups in your business. This is where most organisations get it wrong. While representation is important, it\u2019s just one piece of the puzzle. Diversity and inclusion also refers to the opportunities available, amongst others, and extends beyond race.
