{"id":3411,"date":"2020-06-12T11:54:08","date_gmt":"2020-06-12T11:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inpulse.com\/?p=3411"},"modified":"2020-06-12T11:54:08","modified_gmt":"2020-06-12T11:54:08","slug":"diversity-in-the-workplace-5-ways-to-educate-your-employees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/diversity-in-the-workplace-5-ways-to-educate-your-employees","title":{"rendered":"Diversity in the Workplace; 5 Ways to Educate your Employees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, many spheres of society still struggle with the meaning of diversity, inclusion and equal opportunity &#8211; and it\u2019s especially prominent in the workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2018\/dec\/02\/revealed-the-stark-evidence-of-everyday-racial-bias-in-britain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of more than 5,000 Britons, a staggering <\/span>65%<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all ethnic minority participants experienced<\/span> racial harassment in their workplace<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the last five years, while <\/span>49% <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said they had been <\/span>treated unfairly by their employer<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of their race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in a separate survey of 3000 Britons, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">57% of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people from BAME groups felt they had<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to<\/span> work harder to succeed in Britain<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of their ethnicity, and 40% feel they <\/span>earn less, or experience worse employment prospects<b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the same reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These results are extremely concerning, considering that diversity should be especially celebrated and encouraged within the workplace. A number of studies have proven that diversity accelerates creativity and innovation, improves recruitment and retention of talent, and even boosts productivity. But let\u2019s not forget that the benefits of diversity shouldn\u2019t be the reason for its implementation\/encouragement in the workplace, organisations should be recruiting and retaining talent based on skill and experience and should be creating equal opportunities for all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the responsibility of all organisations to learn and identify areas they can improve upon when it comes to diversity, inclusion and equality, and educate their workforce about the importance of it. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/blacklivesmatter-your-business-can-be-a-catalyst-for-change\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Real change begins with education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5 Ways to Educate your Employees on Diversity<\/b><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Demonstrate your Values\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s difficult to educate and gain the support of your workforce if key areas within your organisation fail to promote or align with the message and lesson you\u2019re trying to get across. If diversity is low or non-existent in your leadership and top management teams, for example, educating your workforce on the importance of diversity will prove difficult. If you\u2019re not <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/247288\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demonstrating your values<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through the people you recruit and promote, you\u2019ll struggle with implementing your diversity and inclusion strategies, and may even struggle to avoid sensitive incidents\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Dismantle Unconscious Bias\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organisations shouldn\u2019t have to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">try<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be diverse; diversity should be \u2018easy\u2019 if their recruitment, retainment and promotion of talent is based on just that &#8211; talent. Unfortunately, though, it\u2019s come to light that many organisations (and other areas of society) have been guilty of unconscious bias and are now being forced to quickly review and refine their approach to areas such as recruitment, amongst others. In this case, it\u2019s crucial that teams susceptible to unconscious bias &#8211; or who are responsible for people-centric operations such as HR personnel, are trained to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.tutsplus.com\/tutorials\/what-is-unconscious-bias--cms-31455\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dismantle unconscious bias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Beyond this, it\u2019s important they\u2019re educated on the need and importance of diversity in the workplace, and their social responsibility to judge individuals based on their value-adding characteristics alone; such as skillset and expertise, experience, and cultural fit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Train those in People-Centric Positions First<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important for the entire organisation to learn and understand the importance of diversity in the workplace, but those in people-centric positions such as leaders, management and HR personnel should be educated\/trained first. This will accelerate the creation of diverse teams, and once again, help you to demonstrate your values for the rest of the organisation to acknowledge and learn from.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Celebrate Diversity<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/smallbusiness.chron.com\/celebrate-various-cultures-workplace-12063.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrating diversity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps to create a particular workplace culture: one where diversity and inclusion are encouraged and valued. It works as a great educational \u2018tool\u2019, not only to demonstrate your values as an organisation but for people to learn from each other through communication and perhaps even demonstration. Beyond this, celebrating diversity makes every single person, regardless of race, culture or background, feel valued and acknowledged.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Be Proactive<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re serious about being better; driving change, creating equal opportunity in your workplace and changing society, you need to remain proactive in the fight. Training is not a once-off initiative, and verbally expressing your views and values is not enough either.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educating yourself on your people, their needs, your shortfalls and finding ways to improve is a full-time commitment. Training the workforce should also be consistent and the approach to training should be refined regularly based on what you learn.
