{"id":1203,"date":"2019-08-29T12:44:54","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T11:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inpulse.com\/?p=1203"},"modified":"2019-08-29T12:44:54","modified_gmt":"2019-08-29T11:44:54","slug":"healthy-mind-healthy-body-leadership-nugget-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/healthy-mind-healthy-body-leadership-nugget-3","title":{"rendered":"Healthy Mind, Healthy Body &#8211; Leadership Nugget 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2012 I ran the Dublin marathon, it took a lot of hard work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, focus and commitment and that was just the training!<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0In preparation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as someone who didn\u2019t run\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">regularly,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I had to decide what shoes to get and as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">always<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had more fun choosing the shoes than\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">necessarily<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0running in them!<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I tried a few different brands before I came across\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ASICS &#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a Japanese athletic equipment company.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">What I really liked about ASICS is what the letters stand<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0for &#8211; an acronym for the Latin phrase\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">anima\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">sana<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in corpore\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">sano<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fwhich translates as\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;a<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0healthy mind in a healthy body<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Now that\u2019s right up my street and something I\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">totally<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0believe in. Get it right in the mind and the rest follows.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Patience, kindness, hope, vision,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">thoughtfulness<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, encouragement all\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">flow<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0so much better when we have a healthy mind.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e deal better with conflict, challenge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and obstacles when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">we are \u2018thinking straight\u2019 as they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0say \u2013 w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hich is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">why\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">my leadership nugget<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0number<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a03 is \u2018maintain a healthy mind to lead better\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0not\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">particularly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0catchy but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">true<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0nevertheless.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently added\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018burnout\u2019 to their list of official syndromes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0this isn\u2019t a problem going away<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in fact\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s getting worse and more recognised!<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Through<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Inpulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">often\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">see \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">workload<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">being\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">referred to by employees as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">cause of them\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">feel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u2018burnt out\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">elow are my five ideas for maintaining a healthy mind<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, in order to manage workload<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0better<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0help avoid burnout.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Arial\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Create break times<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 Just like\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">physical<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0fitness, rest times are important<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for our mental health.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sadly, I know myself that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0always be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0busy and worki<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ng non-stop is almost revered<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0love\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">my work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mustn\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0be endless\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">otherwise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0our mind\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">won\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0get the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">periods<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of rest that recover and improve it.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0could mean<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0taking a half day eve<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ry couple of weeks<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or even come in late one morning,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to spend time at home<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">give your<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">elf time to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">read a book, listen to a podcast \u2013\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or do\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">something<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0else<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0not work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0related<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">!\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0simple and it will make a difference.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Plan these breaks by putting them in your diary. And stick to them even when your workload seems\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">too overwhelming, you will find you have increased productivity when you do hit the office and it\u2019s a good chance to put it all in perspective.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Arial\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Exercise matters<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211; If\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">you\u2019re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0not doing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">exercise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0weekly you are mis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sing out on so many benefits! As<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0been proven to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">boost<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0all round\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wellbeing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">especially<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0if it takes in nature \u2013 like a 30min walk in a local wood\/park etc.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 Once again it is important to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">get this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in the diary and stick to it.\u00a0 It takes 6 weeks to form a habit and it won\u2019t be long before you can\u2019t imagine not having this part of your weekly routine.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0It\u2019s also why I\u2019ve chosen to do a half marathon in September!\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Arial\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Take back control<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 I know it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s controversial to use that phrase now in the UK but bear with me<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2026. I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0mean<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0begin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0managing your time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, starting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0taking control of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0your diary \u2013 don\u2019t let it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">manage you!\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Take pressure off yourself by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">learn<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to say no to meetings others\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">put<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in our diaries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unnecessary or could be handled more efficiently with a quick call.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I am convinced h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">alf the meetings we attend don\u2019t ne<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d to happen\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">so\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0time to cut back and give yourself\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">time\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the day.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Arial\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Family and Friends scheme<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 Having time with those you love and whose company you enjoy can give you such a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">boost<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spend time with them, book in something weekly and enjoy sharing a meal,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">drink<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a laugh or just some time \u2018shooting the breeze\u2019 \u2013\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s good to be reminded that life is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0most definitely<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0not all<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0about work!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Arial\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reframe<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">If we continue to play\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">negative<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0thoughts over and over in our mind, they become believable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and exhausting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. One of the skills to develop as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">healthy, resilient leader<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0is that of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">reframing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019. To reframe is defined as \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">placing something in a new frame<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0When we change our point of view on\u202fa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">situation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the facts remain the same, but a deliberate shift is made in how we see\u202fit.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">We can replace the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">unhelpful,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0energy-stealing thoughts with more\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">helpful<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0ones\u202fsuch as:\u202f\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">What can I learn from this situation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">?\u201d or \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">What would a wise old friend<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0tell me to do now<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As we shift o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ur thinking about our situation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0there is a change in emotional tone and the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">meaning that we give to our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0circumstance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">We can choose to move our experience from a negative frame to a more hopeful one, filled with opportunities.
