A<\/span>s I’ve been getting some\u00a0<\/span>r<\/span>&<\/span>r<\/span>\u00a0time on holiday in Ireland I’ve found myself reflecting on the whole topic of leadership, my experiences as\u00a0<\/span>one<\/span>\u00a0at\u00a0<\/span>Inpulse<\/span>\u00a0and working with many in the corporate, charity and faith sectors over the last\u00a0<\/span>two<\/span>\u00a0decades.<\/span>\u00a0Over the next month I will be sharing a nugget\u00a0<\/span>from these reflections each<\/span>\u00a0week<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0so here is my\u00a0<\/span>first little nugget\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0you\u00a0<\/span>to ponder and<\/span>\u00a0see what your views are<\/span>\u00a0on it<\/span>…warning – I’m sure someone else will have said it before and better than me but\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>\u00a0still passionately believe that getting this nugget right can improve leadership and ultimately business performance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nugget 1 – “If you don’t\u00a0<\/span><\/b>communicate\u00a0<\/span><\/b>with conviction you’ll never connect with emotion.”<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve watched countless leaders at\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>own halls,\u00a0<\/span>l<\/span>eadership events and conferences\u00a0<\/span>over the years\u00a0<\/span>and I can count on one hand the number that have stood and delivered their message with true conviction. I’ve lost count of the number who shared their opinions, facts and figures and every single time (EVERY TIME) failed to connect with people<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s emotions and therefore little to nothing was achieved\u00a0<\/span>after<\/span>\u00a0the session. This isn’t about being Churchillian (amazing orator) it is about tapping into your own beliefs and convictions and from that place of power communicating your message. On the few\u00a0<\/span>occasions<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0seen\u00a0<\/span>leaders lead with conviction\u00a0<\/span>in corporate life the impact is awesome – a tea<\/span>m fired up, hopeful, excited and passionate about the future. Leaving the room motivated and connected to what is possible! I\u2019m not guaranteeing it always leads to the outcome you want but you\u2019ve got a hell of a higher chance of achieving<\/span>\u00a0more engagement<\/span>\u00a0by leading with conviction not just facts and figures. So why does this lack of communicating with conviction happen?\u00a0 My view of working with lots of leaders in the corporate world is that we are high on left-brain leaders \u2013 rational, factual, thoughtful and low on right brain leaders \u2013 emotive, evocative and imaginative. This needs to rebalance and it doesn\u2019t need to take new leaders it just needs the existing ones to remember they have a right and left brain and begin to use them in a more holistic way.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Look at what is happening in the world right now, the rise of popularism and those leaders associated with it, they lead and communicate with conviction. Now we can debate whether\u00a0<\/span>their convictions are<\/span>\u00a0helpful or unhelpful but that\u2019s not my point.\u00a0<\/span>My point is<\/span>\u00a0that the public in ma<\/span>ny<\/span>\u00a0countries are voting for people they see as\u00a0<\/span>leading with<\/span>\u00a0conviction not just\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>rational facts and figures<\/span>. Why? Because it connects with their emotions<\/span>, their<\/span>\u00a0fear, hope, trust. And that connection is so strong<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0people\u00a0<\/span>will\u00a0<\/span>leave their homes and go vote for it! In my\u00a0<\/span>few experiences of seeing leade<\/span>r<\/span>s lead with conviction in corporate life it has encouraged employees to want to be part of the team, give more, work harder, stay later, strive\u00a0<\/span>for results<\/span>, all to bring the leader<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s convictions to life. Where there is no conviction and no connection\u2026guess what<\/span>\u2026.everyone<\/span>\u00a0carries on as normal<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0watching\u00a0<\/span>from afar\u00a0<\/span>to see what happens to the leader<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s facts and figures and only\u00a0<\/span>doing the minimum<\/span>\u00a0required of them.\u00a0 The good news\u00a0<\/span>is that communicating with conviction<\/span>\u00a0is something leaders can grow and develop<\/span>\u00a0at,<\/span>\u00a0but like all things it will take time, focus, effort and change \u2013 starting with new daily habits.\u00a0<\/span>The leaders I\u2019ve seen who\u00a0<\/span>get this right are the ones that have immersed themselves in truly living out their convictions and are communicating them not only when they are talking to a room full of people but at all times.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
