{"id":1080,"date":"2019-05-08T09:54:23","date_gmt":"2019-05-08T08:54:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inpulse.com\/?p=1080"},"modified":"2019-05-08T09:54:23","modified_gmt":"2019-05-08T08:54:23","slug":"sovereignty-and-values","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/sovereignty-and-values","title":{"rendered":"Sovereignty and Values"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I attended a European Referendum debate in my local Methodist church last week. As you\u2019d expect the debate made it\u2019s way round to sovereignty and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0sat there listening to the two side<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of the argument I couldn&#8217;t help<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0think how similar the concepts of sovereignty and values are.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For a start, both are concepts we feel are important and stir passionate debate\u2026.\u2019who wants to lose sovereignty? Who wants to lose their right to live their own values at work?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Whilst we might like the idea of pooling our values for a greater good, just like with sovereignty, most of us still want to reserve the right to take it back or go back to living our own values if we disagree. But most fundamentally I think the similarity is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0whilst we generally understand both concepts\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it is the \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">earthing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019 of both of them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in day to day realities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is the difficult part.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the European debate both speakers were asked to give 3 ways of how the loss of sovereignty affects the average man and woman on the street. Both struggled.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At work Leadership is asked how to br<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing the values to life on a day-to-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">day basis not just in the performance management system. It\u2019s a good question and one that we\u2019ve been helping companies with for years. Often leaders understand the \u2018big levers\u2019 they can use to drive conformity to the values. For example<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0measuring and remunerating some of your\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">alary and bonus on how you deliver your goals as much as what goals you deliver. But the real skill, the real science is in the ability to bring the values to life on a day-to-day basis.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My colleague wrote a blog on the five senses of values that outlined how you can bring values to life.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Below are 3\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">further practical\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ways we suggest you can do this\u2026.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a01.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eekly team conversations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">spend 5mins every week as a tea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">m asking two questions \u201chow did we live<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0our values last week<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d this gives stories, examples and an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ec<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dotes that reinforce how to live the values and often leads to debate on what living them locally actually means. And secondly ask \u201cwhat opportunities this week have we got to live our values?\u201d this provides further real life examples\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of where the values can be outworked<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">2. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Internal Communication Stories \u2013 people need r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">easons to believe so share practical ex<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ples of people living the values across the organisation. Proving how the person and the business benefited as a result. These stories can come from the weekly conversations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0above<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or from local champions whose role it is to find and share these stories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">3. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The L<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eadership\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">messaging \u2013 if every time a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">leader spoke they referenced the values and specifically gave practical examples of how the big strategic decisions they are making have been informed by the values, they wou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ld take root much faster. This needs to be done in a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0credible, real-world way not some false \u2018everything we do links to the values\u2019 but when challenged can<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">actually\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">show how. What gets talked about constantly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is what becomes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0important. That\u2019s why everyone is focused on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">targets because more often than not that\u2019s what Leaders spend most of their time talking<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0about, not how they deliver those<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0targets.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019re right in the middle of a significan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t Values project with an e-retailer\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">client<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and we\u2019d be delighted to talk with you about how to bring your values to life.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I attended a European Referendum debate in my local Methodist church last week.
