He was talking about buildings, but increasing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ly we are seeing a similar approach<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eadership development. U<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">p until quite recently, clients were often focused on quantity\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and intensi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ty\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">when we were designing programmes \u2013 many wanted to keep participants hard at it from 8am until 6pm and then again into the evening if the session was to be residential. This was often backed up by extensive pre-course work and lots of follow on tasks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In part<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0this reflected the culture of their businesses.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In tough tim<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">es, no one wants to risk being seen as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">slackers, and understandably, L&amp;D departments &#8211; who can be vulnerable anyway to charges of being \u2018fluffy\u2019 \u2013 wanted to show that they could be as hardcore as the rest.\u00a0 It was also a practical response \u2013 when things are leaner, it\u2019s harder to get people to invest time in development.\u00a0 All attention is on business development<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and keeping things going<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and there ar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e often fewer people so<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0those who remain are busier than ever.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The result was a strong push on content \u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the desire was to ensure<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0leaders<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0felt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0like they had got their m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oney\u2019s worth and this was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">manifes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ted in lots of input, long sessions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and something weighty to take away. There was also a practical side to this as L&amp;D professionals realised that their opportunities for getting groups of leaders together were going to be few, therefore they were keen to wring the most from every one they got.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Things are definitely changing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, though<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 We are involved in leadership development programmes for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">several<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0clients who are leading organisations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in key sectors and have noticed big differences in what leaders want and welcome and what\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">L&amp;D\u00a0professionals\u00a0value. The focus now is on providing the space and opportunity for leaders to reflect, develop their thoughts, and share approache<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s.\u00a0 There is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of course\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">still a real emphasis\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on outcomes and getting the most from any investment in development \u2013 we are not talking about unproductive or\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">self-indulgent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0chat \u2013 but the ways of achieving this have changed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Leaders really value time to take stock, perhaps because of the relentless pressure they face day to day.\u00a0 After one recent leadership event, we asked participants, using our online real time survey tool,\u00a0Inpulse, to rank what they found most helpful about what they had done. Thoughtful, well presented content was still cited as important, but equally so were chances to share ideas and experiences and opportunities to work together with people from different parts of the business. Another client conducted a survey to identify the learning climate within the organisation.\u00a0 When asked how they learned best, 90% said by collaborating with team members and 85% cited conversations with others.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From the conversations we have had, part of this is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">due to the change in how we consume facts and instruction<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in all aspects of life<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Many people\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are used to getting information from Google and You Tub<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They like the ease of use and the ability to go back to check and for reference.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0They then often discuss what they find out with friends \u2013 what\u2019s their experience? what\u2019s worked and what\u2019s not? what would they do differently?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The conversations build on the information and help them apply it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Naturally, people also want to do the same at work. This not only means that we need to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">use different<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ways of delivering information to people but they also\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have bigger expectations of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">face to face time\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with colleagues \u2013 far more than<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0spending it getting content, they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0want to come away having processed information and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">been\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">equipped to put it into action.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 It may also be another consequence of time being so sc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">arce \u2013 when we do set aside the \u2018day job\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, we want to squeeze maximum value\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from the time we invest. T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">his means\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">getting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">clear ideas on what to do,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and building relationships with people who can continue to provide support.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At first sight this may seem good news for th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ose of us involved in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0designing and running le<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">adership development programmes \u2013 surely less content means\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">less work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In reality, it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0means greater challenges.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s more important than ever that t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he input we give is finely honed and totally in tune with the issues faced by the organisation and its leaders.\u00a0 It also means a stronger emphasis on facilitation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and being able to set the context and provide a framework.\u00a0 Leadership coaches will be tested on their ability to challenge, probe and ask the right questions to help leaders get where they need to be.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018Less is more\u2019 \u2013 the saying attributed to architect\u00a0Ludwig\u00a0Mies\u00a0van der Rohe, is usually taken to mean that simplicity, clarity and focus enable effective\u00a0and productive\u00a0design.
