\u201cBut we\u2019ve told them a thousand times\u2026.\u201d or words to that effect.\u00a0 We hear this a lot from exasperated executive teams when we give them Inpulse results saying that people don\u2019t know the organisation\u2019s strategy.\u00a0 Often, they have done that, but in ways which fail to register with people, inspire them and help them play their part.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Senior leaders are\u00a0<\/span>very close to the strategy and have worked long and hard on getting it right.\u00a0 But this can often be a handicap when it comes to explaining it, and most importantly, getting others fired up and excited. They know too much detail and it\u2019s hard to see the strategy from their audience\u2019s viewpoint<\/span>. We help by giving an e<\/span>xternal perspective, and asking the \u2018dumb\u2019 questions which can\u00a0<\/span>keep it simple.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>In doing this, w<\/span>e hav<\/span>e found 5 key things which help:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Develop a simple narrative<\/span><\/b>\u00a0–\u00a0 technical language, management speak, and complex sentences turn people off.\u00a0<\/span>On the other hand, most of us\u00a0<\/span>respond<\/span>\u00a0to stories and find<\/span>\u00a0day to day language accessible. We have helped organisations express their strategy through a story with a series of key chapters\u00a0<\/span>which take people through\u00a0<\/span>the challenges the organization faces, why it\u2019s important to tackle them, what it plans to do, what this means for people working there, why it\u2019s exciting and the benefits of success. All the way through, it\u2019s important to keep it conversational, using everyday language.\u00a0 Any hint of complexity can give people licence to switch off.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Senior leaders need to show the way \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b>the top team have huge influence<\/span>.\u00a0 If they\u00a0<\/span>present the strategic narrative to other tiers of leaders, it can have a big\u00a0<\/span>impact on how<\/span>\u00a0they then\u00a0<\/span>do things.\u00a0<\/span>Thi<\/span>s is especially the case if the top team<\/span>\u00a0can bring parts of the narrative to life using their own stories and experiences. These keep people\u2019s attention, make messages more memorable, and help show that senior leaders are human.\u00a0<\/span>Most importantly senior leaders need to keep it\u00a0<\/span>conversational, which means no PowerP<\/span>oint slides\u2026 something many find tough<\/span>\u00a0at first,\u00a0<\/span>but\u00a0<\/span>notice the difference in levels of connection and impact afterwards.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Equip team leaders to share the narrative locally<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 seeing the top team present the strategy differ<\/span>ently will be a strong encouragement to other leaders<\/span>\u00a0to do the same<\/span>.\u00a0 Often<\/span>, though<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0they need help to adopt a similar approach themselves.\u00a0 We have\u00a0<\/span>found giving team leaders<\/span>\u00a0a clear, step by step structured guide helps a lot.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>We call it Talking Points and i<\/span>t\u00a0<\/span>lays out key messages, questions to ask, exercises and activities<\/span>.\u00a0 The more experienced and<\/span>\u00a0confident leaders use it as a reference\u00a0<\/span>aid, while the less confident\u00a0<\/span>can<\/span>\u00a0follow it more closely.\u00a0 Giving this support helps ensure more consistency of approach which will ensure that people across the organization have similar experiences of the strategy.<\/span>\u00a0 The crucial role that local leaders can play is in bringing the strategy to life for their teams by giving examples that they can recognize and relate to and explaining the implications for them \u2013 what they need to do to play their part.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Help people to share their own stories<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 as well as understanding what the strategy is, people need to see ongoing evidence that it is being followed, and having an impact.\u00a0 Updates from\u00a0<\/span>senior people can only go so far.\u00a0 What really keeps people engaged is a regular stream of stories which show real people doing real jobs applying the strategy and making it work. The challenge here is often not a lack of things worth talking about, rather it is helping people spot them, articulate them and share them.\u00a0 We equip local leaders to help their teams identify a story which will have impact and used Inpulse as a mechanism for them to share them.\u00a0 We found people can be put off if they feel they\u00a0<\/span>have to<\/span>\u00a0submit long, well written stories.\u00a0 Inpulse restricts the length of submission which means they only need to send the key points and can do so in an easy, straightforward way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Keeping it going<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 strategies need to be living things.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0To have impact, they must\u00a0<\/span>be talked about regularly, and oth<\/span>er messages should<\/span>\u00a0be linked with it<\/span>\u00a0so people get a sense of coherence and progress.<\/span>\u00a0Having a simple and clear narrative makes this easier by giving straightforward messages which can be repeated and reflected in other communications \u2013 it becomes a consistent point of reference.<\/span>\u00a0In addition, we have found having people on the ground locally to champion the strategic narrative, keep it in people\u2019s minds\u00a0<\/span>and localize it helps establish it as part of the way an organization does business.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
