This can take place at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">several<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0levels \u2013 the CEO in some organisations sends out a video message and\/or stages a series of town hall meetings to reiterate priorities and give an overview of the challenges and aims for the coming year.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This can often be supported by a reminder of the big successes of the previous year \u2013 those crucial reasons to believe which help people see that progress is being made.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0This helps establish a sense of momentum and continuity and provides a useful context for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">local discussions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These local conversations are crucial. Most leaders make a team meeting a priority in the first week back so they can rekindle the team\u2019s spirit, highlight what its members need to do to play their part and restate objectives.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Such a session helps everyone get up to speed quickly.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0More informally, an early team session serves as a great opportunity to spot issues and concerns and give people an opportunity to be listened.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sometimes, just having the conversation can be enough to reassure people &#8211; o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ften when people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have doubts or questions,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">being heard can go a long way to help people deal with them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many leaders also\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">need to start having more\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">quick half hour informal discussion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with no rigid agenda<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. These<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can also help highlight issues and remind people that they are valued and an important part of the team.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For some with big teams, it\u2019s a heavy investment of time, but one that many find invaluable. Our experience is that one to ones can be the jewel in a leader\u2019s communication crown<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but because they are so resource hungry, they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">must<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0be used sparingly.\u00a0 The first week or two\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of each\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">month<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is a good time to invest the time necessary and can pay real dividends in terms of team relationships and commitment throughout the year.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Informal communication \u2013 casual conversations in corridors, around the coffee or water machines and at meals \u2013 is also a vital communication tool in the leader\u2019s kitbag at any time of the year, but especially at the start.\u00a0 Being visible, available and interested helps build trust between leaders and th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eir teams and enables<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0keep a finger on the pulse of the organisation.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can also help highlight issues and give people a chance to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ask questions and raise issues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It can be hard to get informal communication right for some leaders as it can feel slightly forced and unnatural to start a conversation. Those that get it right ask questions about what people are making of what is going on, what issues they are facing and how they feel about the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">role<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 The balance is much more on asking questions and listening than\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">attempting to push messages at people. If leaders start to collar people to recite a lot of key messages, it won\u2019t be long before their teams work out ways of avoiding them.<\/span><span
