That\u2019s why we start every\u00a0Inpulse\u00a0survey with the question, \u2018How do you feel about\u2026.?\u2019\u00a0 Participants are then invited to select two emotions from a range of 9 offered, the list being tailored to fit the issue\/event\/ activity in question.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This information provides valuable insight into people\u2019s emotional state and allows tracking of engagement \u2013 positive feelings such as committed, empowered, and motivated show engagement while the more negative ones such as apprehensive, demotivated and anxious suggest the opposite.\u00a0Inpulse\u00a0has been widely used over the last five years across a variety of sectors: retail, publishing, academia, technology, household goods, manufacturing and finance.\u00a0 It\u2019s been applied to run pulse checks, full blown opinion surveys, reactions to changes, making Town Halls interactive and to review coaching workshops.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Therefore, w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e now<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0have a very useful\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">array of data.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Of course, these surveys are from different\u00a0organisations, designed and carried out for different reasons, each with different populations. Nonetheless it fascinating to add<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0up all the emotions selected i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n each of these surveys<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to see what it tells us<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0 A bit of fun really, but also<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a fascina<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ting snap shot and insight into\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">how people are feeling<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0about their work and\u00a0organisations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Let\u2019s start with the overall picture.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In terms of emotions selected, it\u2019s pretty much level pegg<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ng \u2013 out of 41 emotions, 21 are positive and 20 are negative.\u00a0 However, the positive emotions tend to have been selected more frequently than the negatives \u2013 some of which were only\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">chosen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a handful of time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0 Overall then, it seems<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0like good news\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0people\u00a0at work are generally more engaged and positive than not.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">So far, so good.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">But<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0if they are engaged, why is that?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0 The top three<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0selected<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0positive emotions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0may help explain this.\u00a0 They<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0are enthusiastic (198), motivated (195) and inspired (181)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0 This suggests that in a lot of cases, leaders are getting their messages about their vision and strategies through \u2013 it\u2019s hard to be any of these things if you don\u2019t know where you are heading and how you will get there. The next three positive are empowered (168), confident (152) and valued (145), which also indicate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that leaders have been successful in helping\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">many\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">people take responsibility, try out new things and be recognized for successes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It\u2019s not all good news<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0though<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0as alongside these positives are two high scoring negatives \u2013 disconnected on 189 and disappointed on 155.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">This indicates that there is little room for complacency and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">that leaders are not being successful in helping everyone feel part of what\u2019s happening in their organization, or g<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">etting behind it.\u00a0 Even\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">where strategy and vision are clear, it seems that a good chunk of people still feel non plussed by it and are yet to see what part they can play and how it will help them.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0 This is reinforced as we look a little lower down the list at the next negatives. Apprehensive (141) and Anxious (135)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">indic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a sizable number<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of people find themselves in uncertain and unfamiliar\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">circumstances<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in which they are unlikely to perform at their best, while demotivated (131), uninterested (128), negative (124) and plain bored (117) are all high score<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s for such destructive emotions and highlight lost opportunities to capture people\u2019s imagination and the discretionary effort that goes with it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Before we get too gloomy, though, there is some apparent good news at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">other end of the scale<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, though.\u00a0 There are low scores for intimidated (12)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, manipulated (9) and upset (4).<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">This is important as these tend to be negative emotions which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0are caused by deliberate bad\u00a0behaviour\u00a0by leaders. This\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">tells us that relatively few people are experiencing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the consequences of such\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">behaviour<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and that perhaps\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">managing by fear and command and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0control seems to be on the wane.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In summary, then, the emotions expressed by people in\u00a0Inpulse\u00a0surveys so far suggest movement in the right direction.\u00a0 They are more positive, and indicate greater understanding, belonging and empowerment while the impact of bad\u00a0behaviour\u00a0by bosses is relatively low. Leaders still need to watch their mettle, though and work on making connections, explaining implications and help people see how they can contribute.\u00a0 We\u2019ll watch the next batch of surveys
