{"id":1001,"date":"2019-04-01T09:45:12","date_gmt":"2019-04-01T08:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inpulse.com\/?p=1001"},"modified":"2019-04-01T09:45:12","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T08:45:12","slug":"taking-your-pulse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thirteencreative.co.uk\/inpulse21\/taking-your-pulse","title":{"rendered":"Taking Your Pulse\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At\u00a0Inpulse we recognise that whilst clients are looking for a more real-time, transparent and simple to use pulse survey, they often use this alongside the annual engagement survey.\u00a0 What I describe below is a fictional story based on real encounters we have had. We hope that you find the story thought provoking and it helps you think about how to best use your annual results for your business.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018Jane called me up and said let<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s go for coffee and talk about som<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e \u2018opportunit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ies\u2019 she had<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in her<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ganisation. Over a latte, Jane described<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0how following the annual\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">engagement\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">survey results she and the team\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n to put together a plan on how to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0respond to the results. In the action plan she had<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0inc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lude<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a couple of workshops\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with employees and key HR colleagues<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to help understand what the results meant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This all sounded reasonable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0exc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ept this conversation was taking\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">place\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">three<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0months after Jane put the plan together<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and things had<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0not gone how the team expected!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Firstly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the leadership team had a different reading of the results<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0bec<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ause Jane had only consulted a few employees<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the leadership<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0had ridden roughshod over her insights suggesting they weren\u2019t representative. This\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ultimately meant the actions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and ideas p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">roposed were changed. Then employees didn\u2019t respond positively to the actions, which were rolled out\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to solve the i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ssues raised in the survey\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013 in Jane\u2019s words they weren\u2019t \u2018going along with them\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and felt they had come from \u2018above\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So Jane looked a little frustrated and wanted to know how I could<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0help!<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Listening to Jane caused me to think back to when my dad was a head teacher of a large secondary school in Leeds. He faced many<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of these<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2018opportunities\u2019 and would often talk about the need t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o truly engage his staff in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">his plan for the school.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0His thinking was quite simple. Involving people in shaping the outcomes would lead to th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">em \u2018feeling\u2019 included<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which more often than not would mean th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ey would do<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0what was necessary to achieve the outcome.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I proposed this simple process to Jane &#8211; with one addition. The addition was to first of all gain insight from our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inpulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0survey. This means working with employees to get \u2018under the skin\u2019 of how they feel and why and asking additional questions to understand the results from the annual survey. For example, what do they mean when they say line managers don\u2019t communicate well? Is it about skill, will or both? With true representative insight we can then go back and share with the leadership in a way that shows we have \u2018got\u2019 the issues and with a strong sample, it makes it harder for them to challenge the insight. Then the key is to get the leaders to propose outcomes not process \u2013 \u2018we want all line managers to be recognised as good\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">communicators\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Armed with the outcomes we can then go and involve employees in helping to shape how we achieve the outcomes so that they \u2018feel\u2019 involved and are therefore much more likely to make the changes that are necessary. A conversation that leads to action.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Back to reality \u2013 following a couple of real conversations we had with a business going through a similar situation, our advice was taken and we supported them with achieving the outcomes required to address the results. Their achievements have been fantastic with anecdotal intelligence and the quarterly\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inpulse<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0sample improving, which shows employees have appreciated the way they\u2019ve been included and are now helping make the actions happen.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At\u00a0Inpulse we
